Difference in rollerskates bearings.

Although they might be overlooked by the average recreational rollerskater, bearings are an integral part of inline skates. Choosing the right type is key to getting the best performance out of your skates.

Difference in rollerskates bearings:

Basics
Make sure you know what size bearings your skates are designed for. Most skates use 8 mm bearings. Also note how many bearings are in the package when comparing prices. You need two bearings per wheel.

ABEC Ratings
Most bearings are rated from 1 to 9 using the ABEC system, a standardized system that was originally designed for bearings used in machinery. The higher the ABEC rating, the higher precision the bearing has. But that does not take into account other factors that can affect its performance as a skate bearing.

Other Bearing Ratings
ILQ and SG ratings use a similar scale to ABEC–1 to 9 using odd numbers–with the higher number being the more precise bearing. These bearings are manufactured specifically for skating.

Additional Types
Titanium, Swiss and ceramic bearings are higher-end bearings typically used by skaters who are looking for high performance. Titanium-coated ball bearings reportedly hold their shape longer than solid-steel bearings. Ceramic bearings are said to produce less friction, thereby allowing them to spin faster. Swiss bearings are considered to have higher manufacturing standards.

Expert Insight
Consider the type of skating you are doing and solicit opinions from other skaters who have learned through trial and error. Bearing friction matters more at top speeds so speed skaters will want to invest more in higher-end bearings. More moderately priced bearings can perform fine for someone who is skating in a park or for fitness.
